OUR DECEMBER 1997 CELEBRITY HOME IS...

THE HOME JAMES (Jimmy) STEWART
We chose Jimmy Stewart's Home purposely for our December Celebrity Home because of all the fond memories that this actor has brought to all of our lives especially with his role as George Bailey in Frank Capra's classic "It's a Wonderful Life." This magnificent 2 story English Tudor is situated a short distance to the heart of Beverly Hills shopping district and the world famous boutiques of Rodeo Drive. Yet, one would think you were a million miles away as you make your way down the tree lined street where it is so quiet you could hear a gentle wind rustle through the trees. The home has approx 6500 sq feet on a 58,200 sq foot lot (2 parcels of land), 5 bedrooms, 5 baths, 2 staff quarters, library, swimming pool and a 3 room guest house all on impeccably manicured grounds. His children have recently listed the property for sale for $6.7 million dollars.
Jimmy Stewart (his real name) was born May 20, 1908 in Indiana, Pennsylvania. He was the first movie star to enter the service during World War II & joined one year prior to the bombing of Pearl Harbor. During his tour of service he earned the air Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Croix de Guerre and 7 battle stars. In his hometown, a museum in honor of him was dedicated on May 20, 1995. When Jimmy won his first Best Actor Oscar in 1940 for 'Mr. Smith Goes To Washington' (a must see) he sent the Oscar home to his father who placed it in his hardware shop where it remained for over 25 years. James' career as an actor began in 1934 in the film 'This side of Heaven.' He has appeared in almost 100 films during his career and has won the Academy Award (Oscar) as Best Actor in 1941 in the 'Philadelphia Story' and in 1940 in 'Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.' Additionally, he has been nominated several times over for the Oscar, has won the Cecil B. DeMille Golden Globe award in 1965 as well as a Special Oscar for Lifetime Achievement. The United Kingdom's 'Empire Magazine' lists James Stewart as #10 in the 'Top 100 Move Stars of All Time.' Jimmy's down home style has endeared him to fans across the globe and his passing on July 2, 1997 has not diminished his popularity nor the love and affection fans continue to have for him. Fans from around the world still make his home one of the most visited stopping off points when touring Beverly Hills. I know that when I pause in front of this home, its like peering into movie history, a nostalgic look back into Hollywood's Golden Era, at a man who has touched our lives and made it just a little bit more wonderful!
