The Biography:
Born Elvis Aron Presley on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, his family moved to Memphis when he was thirteen. He worked as a theatre usher, a truck driver and also began to sing locally. In 1955 he signed with RCA records and is credited for establishing rock and roll music as we know it today. Before his death, he had sold over 600,000,000 singles and albums. He also appeared in 33 movies, the first of which was 'Love Me Tender' in 1956. Other films include 'Blue Hawaii', 'Jailhouse Rock' and 'Viva Las Vegas.' While none of the films he appeared in were critically acclaimed, they nonetheless held their own at the box office because of the world wide following that Elvis had. Elvis passed away on August 16, 1977 and till today, his appeal is as great (if not greater) as when he was alive. Fans from all over the world flock to his former home in Memphis (Graceland) on a daily basis with enormous overflow crowds arriving on his birthday and the anniversary of his death. There is no doubt in anyone's mind that Elvis changed forever the face of rock and roll as was the case when the Beatles came onto the scene some 10 years later. To many, Elvis was and always will be the 'King' of rock and roll.
